The Same Eyes
that can see light
and beauty
are the same eyes
that can see nothing
but darkness
and gloom
perceive both perfection
and flaw
read both poetry
and vicious spells
look sideways
in curiosity
upwards
in contempt
brim with love
teem with lust
leer at rival beauty queens
disarm hostility
with charm
wound with piercing
dagger looks
shed both tears of joy
and tears of sorrow
become the windows
to the soul
behind whose shutters hide
a whimsical heart
an arbitrary mind
eyelid screens
where dream scenes
are projected
from scripts whipped up
without fear
of censure
allowing soul
and spirit
to view images
non-existent
when the lights
are on
these are
the same eyes
round and simple
like Neruda’s ring.
